Description

The Steiner Cottages, across from the Congress Hall at 22 & 24 Congress Street, were built as twins in 1851 in the Gothic Revival style, by brothers John & Joseph Steiner, businessmen from Philadelphia. They were among the very first summer cottages built in Cape May. This home is positioned beach block and features high ceilings and large rooms to enjoy the summer air. The home has been maintained but awaits modernization. Large, enclosed porch. Living room, Dining room, kitchen and powder room on the first floor. The second floor has open porch with wonderful views, 3 bedrooms and 1 baths. The third floor has two bedrooms. It is rumored that the cottages were a stop on Harriet Tubman's underground railroad because when 23 Windsor (originally the servants' quarters and summer kitchen for 24 Congress) was moved forward in the 1960's to create a backyard for the Lewises, they found a secret hiding place beneath the building. Harriet Tubman worked at several hotels in the neighborhood, including the Alcott House and Congress Hall across the street from the property. (As told by Jane Biddle Lewis.) The current owners' great-grandparents Isadore & Maude Pocher purchased 22 Congress and 21 Windsor (originally one lot) in 1923 because Maude needed a place to park her convertible Buick and a 4-car garage was just about large enough. 21 Windsor is separately listed so you could have street to street ownership.
